Sinopec Limited, also known as China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, is one of the largest oil and petrochemical enterprises and is owned by Sinopec Group. Sinopec Group is a state-owned company, and operates as the sole state-sanctioned petrochemical investment entity, with a base of operation in Beijing. The company was founded in July 1998, with business laterals encompassing exploration of oil and gas, refinement, and production of petrochemicals, chemical fertilizers, chemical fibers and other related products. The company also deals with natural gas and crude oil storage and transportation.
2009 was a landmark year for the organization as it entered the top 10 highest grossing companies within the Fortune 500, thereby making it the first Chinese company to do so. In 2011, it improved upon its ranking, moving from ninth to fifth. The total share value of Sinopec amounts to approximately $86.7 billion, 75 percent of which is owned by its parent company, Sinopec Group.
