Repsol S.A. is a fully integrated international oil and gas company. Located in its home base in Madrid Spain, the company is involved in all upstream and downstream aspects of the oil and gas industry. This would include the exploration, extraction, processing, production, marketing and distribution of both oil, gas and natural gas product in many parts of the world.
Repsol was founded in 1987 as part of a spinoff prompted by the Spanish government, which had founded INH in 1981 as a means of trying to control the country’s oil operations. Repsol is a publicly traded company on the Bolsa De Madrid Exchange under the symbol REP. In its early years, the company operated under the name Instituto Nacional De Hidrocarburos.
After working for 12 years on domestic exploration and distribution of oil and gas products, the company made its first foray into the international market in 1999 when they acquired a 97.81% stake in the Argentine oil and gas company YPF S.A. After establishing itself as a viable international oil and gas concern through acquisition, it became easier for Repsol to expand operations across the globe. Currently, the company maintains operations in countries such as Libya, Indonesia, Spain, Venezuela, Argentina, and Bolivia. They also operate in the Canary Islands as well as in Trinidad and Tabago.
The company maintains its primary headquarters in Madrid. It is headed up by Antonio Brutau Niuboy (Chairman of the Board) and Josu Jon Imaz San Miguel (CEO). These two gentlemen oversee the activities of over 24,000 people worldwide.
For the fiscal year ended during 2013, Repsol reported gross revenues of €44.67 billion, which translated into net operating income of €2.57 billion and net income of just over €195 million. The company showed nets assets of €65.1 billion as of the same time period.
