Petrobras, or Petroleo Brasileiro S.A is a multinational company with a base of operations in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The company is heavily invested in energy, in the form of natural gas and crude oil. As per market capitalization figures, Petrobras is acknowledged as the largest company of Southern Hemisphere. Originally founded as far back as 1953, legal reforms saw the company lose its position as the monopoly within Brazil’s oil industry. Nevertheless, the company still remains one of the largest producers of oil and natural gas, producing approximately two million barrels per day.
Apart from owning a number of oil tankers and refineries, and being a leader in the distribution of oil products, the company is also known for its research into deep-water oil exploration and production. September 2010 saw Petrobras make history with a share sale on the BM&F exchange, in excess of $72 billion. Since the sale, it has been ranked as the 4th biggest corporation globally, in terms of market capitalization.
