Cosmo Oil Company Limited is one of the largest natural gas and oil companies in Japan. The company is headquartered in Tokyo and was originally founded in the year 1939. As one of the oldest petrochemical companies in Japan, the company’s roots began with a corporation known as Maruzen Petroleum, founded by Zenzo Matsumara. It was only in 1986 that Cosmo Oil Company came to be, after a merger between Daikyo Petroleum and Maruzen Petroleum.
Currently, Cosmo oil companies has assets in the form of four refineries – one in Ichihara, one in Yokkaichi, another in Sakaide and the final one located in Sakai. The combined capacity of all four refineries amounts to approximately 590,000 barrels of oil per day. As a public entity, Cosmo Oil Company had a total turnover of approximately 2,831 billion Yen as per 2006 statistics. The company had a total workforce of approximately 2000 people in 2007, and its current president is Yaichi Kimura.
