Bharat Petroleum has consistently been ranked in the Fortune 500 list, since its inception. The company is a wholly state-owned oil and natural gas enterprise. Bharat Petroleum has its headquarters in Mumbai, India, and recorded revenue figures amounting to approximately $40 billion as per statistics from 2012. The company has a long and illustrious history that dates back all the way to 1889, when it spun out of the Burmah Oil Company. It was only in 1976 though, that the Burmah Shell Company was acquired by the Government of India to create Bharat Refineries. Its name was changed to Bharat Petroleum in 1977.
Currently, Bharat Petroleum operates using four different refineries. Its refineries are located in Mumbai, Kochi, Bina, and Assam. The total amount of oil produced by all four refineries is approximately 30 million metric tons per annum. In 2000, the company received the National HRD (Human Resource Development) Award for its outstanding contributions.
