Alexey Miller holds a PhD in Economics from the Leningrad Finance and Economics Institute. After graduating, Alexey Miller worked as an engineer and economist at the Civil Construction Research and Design Institute, also in Leningrad.
In the early 1990’s, he worked as a junior researcher for the Leningrad Finance and Economics Institute. He was promoted to section head of the Economic Reform Committee at the Executive Committee of the Leningrad City Council, overseeing civil engineering projects and major budget spending of the city.
He has been serving as deputy chairman of Gazprom’s BOD since 2002. It is said Russian President Vladimir Putin lobbied for Miller’s appointment as CEO, in order to put an end to speculations that some of Gazprom’s senior executives had shady connections that influenced their strategic decision-making process.
